Up in the Air

Ryan was sulking and heartbroken on his business-class seat, when suddenly the air hostess chirped a little announcement. A certain someone should be excited -- he has accumulated 10M miles of mileage! The hostess team danced in, the champaign was popped, and a man of age in a captain's suit strode close.

The moment of my dreams! Ryan thought to himself, but with a silent grunt. But not now!

"May I sit beside you?" the captain pointed to the empty seat beside Ryan. "Sure, of course," Ryan replied with a faint smile.

The captain settled himself, and put his deep-set squinty eyes steadily on Ryan. "You are the youngest I have even seen. How on earth do you have so much time?" he amused.

"I do not know either."

"Anyway, here is the card you have been waiting for." The captain reached to his breast pocket, swished out the palm-sized present of honor, and put it gently on Ryan's hands. Shining in polished silver, the card had the words "Ryan Bingham, No.7" engraved on the front.

It was the airline's VIP card, the highest honor only endowed to those accumulated 10M miles. There were more people who landed on the moon than those having this card. The card of Ryan's dream. The signature and pledge of loyalty to life up in the air.

But Ryan only stared into the card at his fingertips. He did not make the effort to even curl his lips.

"Thought you would have something to say to me?" the husky voice of the captain pulled Ryan back from his trance.

"Well, I have been thinking of this moment for so many times in my life..." Ryan started sheepishly after a long pause. "There are so many things I thought of saying, but..." he turned his gaze to meet the captain's. "But nothing I can think of now."

"Don't worry, everyone before you says the same thing." the captain assured, unsurprised. Another pause, as the captain sat back and put his gaze away.

Just before the captain made his leave, he pat Ryan gently on his sholder. "Thank you for your loyalty."

One of the scene in Up in the Air I love very much. Just a few lines between Ryan and the chief pilot, but every line has got a theme behind, an echo that resonates to earlier parts of the story.

A good movie set people thinking. A splendid movie set different people thinking differently.

Judging from all the reviews I have read regarding Up in the Air, I totally understand why it is nominated for the Academy Awards. I was set thinking too.
